How can you honor Veterans Day 2026 in the Tri-Cities of Kingsport, Johnson City and Bristol? Show up, say thank you, and spend the weekend before at one of the events that bring our veterans and their families together. As a Certified Military Expert, and the wife of a U.S. Air Force veteran, I see every year how much it means to the people who served when their neighbors take part.
Here's what's happening this year, how to make the day count, and, because this is what I do every day, what veterans should know about using their benefits to buy a home here.

When is Veterans Day 2026?
Veterans Day 2026 is Wednesday, November 11. It's a federal holiday and a Tennessee state holiday, so post offices and most banks are closed. Because it lands midweek this year, many Tri-Cities events are on the weekend before, Saturday, November 7 and Sunday, November 8.
What Veterans Day events are happening in the Tri-Cities in 2026?
Here's what I could confirm with the organizers' own calendars, plus the yearly traditions worth checking on. Event details can change, so check the official listing before you go.
A Walk in Their Boots at Tipton-Haynes (Johnson City)
Saturday, November 7, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Tipton-Haynes State Historic Site, 2620 South Roan Street in Johnson City. This yearly living history event walks you through American military history from the Revolutionary War to today, with encampments from each era and recognition for veterans. It's a great one for kids and grandparents together. Questions? The site's number is 423-926-3631.
Bristol's Veterans Day parade and ceremony
Bristol holds a Veterans Day parade down State Street each year, followed by a ceremony at the Bristol War Memorial in Cumberland Square Park. Last year it was the Saturday before Veterans Day, with a 10 a.m. start. Look for the 2026 time and lineup on the Believe in Bristol events calendar.
Veterans Day yoga hike at Bays Mountain Park (Kingsport)
Bays Mountain Park has hosted a Veterans Day yoga hike in past years: an easy out-and-back walk on the Lake Road and Azalea Trails with yoga along the way. Spots are limited and registration is required, so check the Bays Mountain events calendar or call the park at 423-229-9447.
James H. Quillen VA Medical Center (Mountain Home)
The Mountain Home VA campus at the corner of Lamont Street and Veterans Way in Johnson City is the heart of veteran care in our region. Its Veterans Day ceremonies are usually for staff and veteran patients, so check the VA Mountain Home Health Care events page if you hope to attend.
Where can veterans get Veterans Day discounts in the Tri-Cities?
Many restaurants, coffee shops, retailers and car care shops with Tri-Cities locations offer free meals or discounts to veterans and active-duty service members on November 11, and some run their offers for the whole week. Offers change every year and vary by location, so a few habits save you a wasted trip:
- Bring accepted proof of service, such as your VA ID card, military ID, DD-214 or a veteran designation on your driver's license.
- Call ahead or check the business's own website to confirm the 2026 offer and hours at that specific location.
- Expect dine-in only rules at some restaurants, and limits like one offer per person.
How can you thank a veteran this Veterans Day?
You don't need a big gesture. These are the ones veterans tell us they remember:
- Go to a local event and bring the kids. Showing up says more than a social media post.
- Ask a veteran about their service, then listen. Many have never been asked.
- Pick up a meal or a coffee for someone in uniform.
- Support local veterans' organizations with your time, not just on November 11.
- Check in on military spouses and families. They served too.
Thinking about buying a home in the Tri-Cities as a veteran?
A lot of veterans choose East Tennessee for the mountains, the pace of life and having the Mountain Home VA close by. If you're one of them, your VA home loan benefit is one of the most valuable things you earned. Here's how buying with it works, step by step:
- Get your Certificate of Eligibility (COE). Your lender can usually pull it for you in minutes.
- Get pre-approved with a lender who closes VA loans often, so you know your real budget before you shop.
- Choose an agent who knows how to write a strong VA offer and explain it to listing agents and sellers.
- Expect a VA appraisal. Besides the value, the appraiser checks that the home meets the VA's basic property requirements, so a good agent flags likely issues early.
- Close, and keep your paperwork. You can often use your VA benefit again later.
What do VA loans offer veterans buying in the Tri-Cities?
For eligible veterans, service members and some surviving spouses, a VA loan often means no down payment and no monthly mortgage insurance. Most VA buyers pay a one-time VA funding fee, which can be rolled into the loan, and veterans receiving VA compensation for a service-connected disability usually don't pay it. Your lender can show you the exact numbers for your situation.
Dave Waldschmidt of Canopy Mortgage is the lender we partner with, and he's licensed in Tennessee. You're always free to choose any lender.
What mistakes do veterans make when buying a home?
- Assuming a VA offer can't compete. A well-prepared VA buyer with a pre-approval and a clear plan for the appraisal is a strong buyer.
- Shopping before getting pre-approved, then falling for a home that doesn't fit the budget.
- Thinking the VA loan is one and done. Many veterans can use their benefit again, sometimes even while keeping a home they already own.
- Missing Tennessee's property tax relief. Tennessee offers property tax relief for some disabled veterans and their surviving spouses, through the Tennessee Comptroller's office. Check whether you qualify.
- Working with someone who doesn't know the VA process. Small paperwork mistakes cause the delays.
